The
Western World's Greatest
Books
----------------------------------
During July we placed online
a few titles which may seem out of keeping with our usual offerings: "Manfred"
by Lord Byron, "In Memoriam" by Lord Tennyson and "The Kiss" by Anton
Chekhov. These titles are on our list of classics at gutenberg.net.au/greatest-books-a.html.
In time we hope to make all of the books on the list available. Of course there
is no definitive list of western classics. The sources of our list are given on
the web page indicated.
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is very well represented on the list, with 8
titles. From the Woolf page at gutenberg.net.au/pages/woolf.html
most of her works can be accessed. There are also a few extracts there from her
writing. I trust that these will tempt you to dip more deeply into her
work.
Here are a few short quotes from Virginia Woolf's writing:
*
Each had his past shut in him like the leaves of a book known to him by heart;
and his friends could only read the title.
* A woman must have money and a
room of her own if she is to write fiction.
* Women have served all these
centuries as looking-glasses possessing the magic and delicious power of
reflecting the figure of a man at twice its natural size.
* Literature is
strewn with the wreckage of men who have minded beyond reason the opinions of
others.
